This joint committee seeks to promote innovation and the development of high-performing timber construction systems that are cost-competitive, sustainable, and resource efficient. They do so to accelerate the adoption of modern construction methods, such as off-site manufacturing and digital technologies, which can reduce waste, improve quality, and significantly shorten build times compared to traditional approaches.
Together, government, industry, and academia in this group collaborate to invest in research to optimise carbon performance, improve productivity, enable reuse and circularity, and expand safe practices for timber construction. This coordinated effort aims to position timber as a leading material in the UK’s sustainable construction future.
While it may not be well known amongst the public, the UK is a world leader in innovation in timber – with new research helping transform the way we use homegrown timber. This has been displayed clearly in the Timber in Construction (TiC) innovation funding stream.
The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) hosted an event at their new Skylon Campus with presentations from several of the TiC innovation fund project leads, showcasing the results of their hard work.
Highlights included the conclusion of a range of research projects outlining the opportunities for more home grown timber to be used within Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), specific products like woodfibre insultation or ply and panel boards, or in building types, like schools, as well as new digital solutions for connecting buyers and sellers.
