BWF Annual Dinner & Awards to be held in London on 24 November

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) will be holding its 2017 Annual Dinner & Awards on Friday 24th November in the Drapers’ Hall in the heart of London.

A formal black-tie dinner with a relaxed atmosphere, the Annual Dinner & Awards night provides a great opportunity for BWF members and their guests to celebrate achievements along with networking with woodworking industry colleagues.

The event will also see the announcement of this year’s BWF Awards winners. There are six categories of award, highlighting technical innovation and excellence in joinery projects and product design, process efficiency and health & safety, as well as special awards for apprentice and trainee performance.

Entry to the sector’s most prestigious awards is free and open to all, including non-members of the BWF, providing that they are from the UK woodworking industry. Entries must be received by 8th September 2017 with shortlisted entrants to receive one free ticket to the Annual Dinner and Awards event with. The shortlist is set to be revealed at Timber Expo in October.

The renewed All Party Parliamentary Group for Timber Industries meets at Westminster

The Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) is delighted to announce the reconstitution of the Timber Industries All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), following the general election held on 8th June.

The renewed APPG held its first AGM on Wednesday 12th July at the House of Commons. Ian Paisley, MP for North Antrim, was re-elected as Chairman. Officers now include Joint Vice Chairman Bill Grant MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock (Conservatives), Joint Vice Chairman Martin Whitfield MP for East Lothian (Labour) and Joint Vice Chairman Andrew Bowie MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine (Conservative).

The Timber Industries APPG will help promote timber as the most sustainable and renewable building material and develop initiatives and economic measures to grow the whole UK Timber Industry supply chain. The Confederation of Timber Industries will assist Parliamentarians in their work by acting as the group's secretariat and providing relevant information and logistic support.

The timber sector is in the top 50% of manufacturing industries in the UK, attracting investment and supporting jobs across the manufacturing and construction sectors, and adding over £10 billion per year to the UK economy. Every constituency in the UK benefits from jobs provided by our sector, whether in construction, manufacturing or distribution.

Roy Wakeman OBE, Chairman of the CTI, said: “We are pleased to see such widespread, cross-party support for our Industry. The timber sector represents a major engine for the growth and development of the UK economy and, with the help of the Timber Industries APPG, we can deliver this message straight to key decision makers in Westminster. The CTI will be on hand to provide assistance and information to any MPs interested in the Industry, along with arranging regular visits to timber operations all over the country.”

A full program of meetings and events for the APPG will be published in September, after the summer recess.

BWF Joinery State of Trade Survey: Sales volume and Costs rise in Q2 2017

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has released the results of its Joinery State of Trade Survey Q2 2017.

The consultation shows that, although rising raw materials costs and labour availability are exerting pressure on joinery manufacturers, the industry is optimistic over sales figures and product investment opportunities.

In details, key points from the BWF Joinery State of Trade Survey Q2 2017 include:

- A balance of 42% of respondents reported an increase in sales volumes over the last quarter, with 52% reporting an increase over the last year. This corresponds with the 14% of respondents reporting a quarterly increase in the previous survey.

- Manufacturers felt that sales volumes would improve in the next quarter, with a balance of 61% predicting an increase for Q3 2017 and a balance of 60% predicting an increase over the next year.

- 42% of companies reported a current order book of future work extending beyond 3 months – up 13% from the previous quarter - with 41% saying that their order book extended from between 1 and 3 months.

- ‘Labour Availability’ was listed as the most likely constraint on output by 27% of respondents. ‘Demand’ and ‘Capacity’ came next, with 25% and 20% of respondents feeling that they were most likely to constrain output.

- 38% of respondents on balance reported increasing their labour force in the last year, with 50% of respondents anticipating an increased labour force over the next year.

- Raw material costs were noted as an inflationary factor for unit costs for 97% of respondents, with wages & salary increases pushing up unit costs for 76% of respondents on balance.

- Exchange rates were a factor in inflating unit costs for 63% of respondents.

- Over the previous year a balance of 64% of respondents had invested in improving their products with 60% investing in their plant/equipment.

- Investment in in product improvement was set for the highest capital investment over the next year, with a balance of 70% planning to invest and with 60% set to invest in plant/equipment.

BWF Policy and Communications Executive Matt Mahony commented: “With optimism over sales volumes and with order books holding up well, our survey paints a picture of an industry working hard to protect its margins against significant cost rises.

“It has been a theme of recent months that the joinery industry is having to think on its feet and diversify its offering. We know from the Q2 survey that investment in product improvement has been rising, and anecdotal evidence suggests that companies are taking on more of the burden of design and specification on account of knowledge gaps within the supply chain."

Fire Door Safety Week 2017 | 25 September – 1 October 2017

This year's edition of the Fire Door Safety Week is set to run from 25th September to 1st October. The aim of the initiative is to stop the legacy of neglect and promote awareness of the critical importance of fire doors.

"With the horrific events of recent months, the importance of Fire Safety has rightly never been more in the spotlight," explain the organisers - including the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the Fire Door Inspection Scheme and the Fire Kills campaign. 

"The tragedy at Grenfell was closely followed by concerns in Camden about the state and lack of Fire Doors in tower blocks and problems being exposed through the press elsewhere.  As the media frenzy inevitably dissipates, it is beholden on us to ensure that lessons are not just learned, but that we affect change."

With this in mind, the Fire Door Safety Week is offering a bank of information to help people and businesses manage their Fire Door issues, from the Fire Door Best Practice Guide to the Five Step Check, from awareness posters to hard hitting films. This advice covers a range of sectors including social housing, private rental properties, hotels, commercial buildings, educational establishments, care homes, hospitals and other types of public buildings

 

How to support the Campaign

"The number of supporters is already growing", the organisers add. "If you haven’t already, you can pledge your support here and we’ll add you to the list, promote your involvement and keep you updated with our news. A number of events are already planned, including those organised by Arnold Laver, Midland Building Products, Hodgson Sealants and Lorient UK. London Fire Brigade is working with the British Woodworking Federation to deliver a fire door safety conference at the Building Centre in London on 28th September (with proceeds going to the Children’s Burns Trust). We are also backed by the Government’s Fire Kills campaign, the Fire Sector Federation, the Passive Fire Protection Forum, the Association for Specialist Fire Protection and Children’s Burns Trust."

 

Social media engagement and Supporter pack

Last year, following Fire Door Safety Week, Rutendo Chitiga and Terry Brown of the Balmoral Estate Tenants Organisation were awarded the Fire Door Ambassador Prize for inspiring hope and awareness in organising its own annual fire door safety campaign. This campaign focussed on tenant awareness and came about as the result of the death of a young expectant mother in a fire in 2015 in a high rise flat on the estate. Major contractor Willmott Dixon won the award for rallying the troops and getting 3,000 employees to carry out the biggest mass fire door inspection ever. London Fire Brigade were also recognised for benchmarking knowledge with its active promotion of the campaign and hosting a superb seminar and debate for its fire safety inspectors.
