BMF shortlisted for Trade Association Best Practice Awards

For the second year running, the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has been shortlisted for three prestigious Trade Association Best Practice Awards in the Trade Association Forum’s (TAF’s) annual contest to take place on 6 July 2016 in London.

The BMF is shortlisted for Magazine of the Year for its quarterly member magazine, One Voice, for Event of the Year for BMF Members’ Day 2015, and for Website of the Year for its dedicated youth recruitment site, www.merchant-recruitment.co.uk.

Linda Cavender, Chief Executive of Trade Association Forum, commented: “Year on year, the standard of entries for the Awards gets higher and higher and this means that our Sifting Panels had an exceptionally difficult job in deciding which entries should go on the shortlist.  However, after lengthy debate, we have a strong list of finalists, all of which have entered some fantastic projects which we will be showcasing in due course at our TA Best Practice Exchange in November later this year.” 

BMF MD, John Newcomb added: “The BMF team works exceptionally hard to support our members and I am delighted that their work has again been recognised. Last year the BMF went on to win two TAF awards and it would be fantastic to have similar success this year, but reaching the shortlist against such stiff competition is worth celebrating in its own right.”

BMF launches new App to bring company information to employees’ fingertips

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has launched a new mobile App specifically designed to create a regular communications stream between companies and their employees.

Developed by Corsby Associates and named BMF Employee Engage App, the App is ideal for multi-site builders merchants or building materials suppliers.

By making essential HR information visible at all times, including the company’s Employee Handbook, Policy & Procedures and the employee’s Contract, the App reduces the time HR staff spend on dealing with basic enquiries.

It can also be configured to push notifications through to each user, so important information is instantly available. With the App on their mobile device, employees can also quickly complete topic surveys when it suits them.

Other functions, such as the Employee of the Month, are designed to encourage and thank workers. Staff members can also interact with each other via the App.

Richard Ellithorne, BMF Membership Services Director, said: “We are extremely excited to offer a fresh approach to employee communications. Most of us use apps everyday for different functions at home so why not use one at work? Particularly one that makes it so simple to interact with directly with everyone in your business.”

Timbmet MD Nigel Cox is the new BMBI Expert for timber and panel products

Timbmet Managing Director Nigel Cox has joined the Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) as the Expert for Timber and Panel Products. Featuring from Q1 2016 report, Mr Cox (in the picture on the left) will focus on timber and panel products market, explaining issues, trends, and new opportunities.

Launched in 2015 by MRA Marketing, under the aegis of the Builders’ Merchant Federation (BMF), the BMBI offers data from GFK’s General Builders’ Merchant Panel with input from national and regional builders’ merchants accounting for over 80% of industry sales.

Wood-based panels distributor Meyer joins BMF

Meyer, one of UK’s leading distributors for wood-based panels, has joined the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF).

Meyer will also host the next BMF Timber Forum at its state of the art training centre in Stoke on Trent on 29 November 2016.

Welcoming the company into membership, BMF Managing Director John Newcomb said: “We are delighted that Meyer has embraced the ethos of the BMF, of suppliers and merchants supporting each other to benefit the whole building materials supply chain. We are particularly pleased that they are opening the doors of their training and exhibition centre to host our next BMF Timber Forum, which I am sure will provide great value.”

David Siggins, Meyer’s Commercial Director, said: “There couldn’t be a better time for us to join the BMF.  We are constantly reminded how little is known in the market about the European Standards that define the performance of wood-based panel products.  Although all plywood is now classified to European Standards, the specification sector continues to use obsolete terms stemming from the withdrawn British Standards. Timber & Joinery products push Builders' merchants sales up in Q1 2016

As reported by the Builders Merchants Building Index, Timber & Joinery Products along with Heavy Building Materials were the key drivers of builders' merchants sales rise in Q1 2016.

According to the Bulletin published by the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF), the two categories accounted 46.6% and 21% of total builders merchants’ sales during the last quarter.

On a year-on-year basis, Heavy Building Materials sales increased 5.2% and Timber & Joinery Products grew 4%.

On a macro scale, Builders Merchants sales in Q1 2016 were up by 5.4% on Q1 2015 with total ex VAT sales-out of £1.27bn compared to £1.20bn. Q1 sales also rose by 4.6% on Q4 2015

BMF’s Managing Director, John Newcomb said: “The year on year and quarter on quarter growth evident in builders merchants sales is clearly encouraging.  It is also at odds with the recent ONS figures that reported construction output down by 1.9%, which have already been challenged by the Construction Products Association. Our data is in line with the CPA’s Q1 survey. ONS figures have been revised in the past, so they may yet come back with a more positive picture that reflects what is actually happening in the market.”
