BMF launches new App to bring company information to employees’ fingertips

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has launched a new mobile App specifically designed to create a regular communications stream between companies and their employees.

Developed by Corsby Associates and named BMF Employee Engage App, the App is ideal for multi-site builders merchants or building materials suppliers.

By making essential HR information visible at all times, including the company’s Employee Handbook, Policy & Procedures and the employee’s Contract, the App reduces the time HR staff spend on dealing with basic enquiries.

It can also be configured to push notifications through to each user, so important information is instantly available. With the App on their mobile device, employees can also quickly complete topic surveys when it suits them.

Other functions, such as the Employee of the Month, are designed to encourage and thank workers. Staff members can also interact with each other via the App.

Richard Ellithorne, BMF Membership Services Director, said: “We are extremely excited to offer a fresh approach to employee communications. Most of us use apps everyday for different functions at home so why not use one at work? Particularly one that makes it so simple to interact with directly with everyone in your business.”

John Porter, MD Crosby Associates, added: “The Employee Engage App provides a new way of thinking and working for many HR functions. Everyone who sees it, loves it, because it is not a one-size fits all approach.  he app can be customised to include the modules that suit the needs of different organisations, and the look and feel can also reflect the company brand. It is also simple to update and include new features and content at a later date.”

BMF claims victory on Government climbdown over reduced VAT for energy-saving materials

The Builders Merchants’ Federation (BMF) has welcomed the announcement that the Government will keep the current reduced rate of Value-Added Tax on the supply and professional installation of energy-saving materials despite losing a European court case last year.

On Monday the Prime Minister told the House of Commons that his Government will not oppose a move by Conservative MPs - acting with the Labour Party - to stop VAT on insulation, heating & hot water system controls, heat pumps, and solar panels being levied at the 20% standard rate.

Since June 2012, the BMF has been working with economists and Government representatives to keep 5% VAT on energy-saving materials defined in eleven product categories under EU law. In particular materials and products affected are: - insulation for walls, floors, ceilings, roofs or lofts, or water tanks, pipes or other plumbing fittings; - draught-stripping for windows & doors; - central heating system controls inc. thermostatic radiator valves;- hot water system controls;- solar panels;- wind and water turbines; - air-source and ground-source heat pumps; - micro-combined heat and power units; - boilers fuelled by wood, straw or similar plant matter.

Brett Amphlett, BMF Policy & Public Affairs’ Manager, commented: “We are very pleased the Government will keep the reduced rate on materials and products that BMF members distribute. This is a significant victory for the BMF and a good news for merchants, manufacturers, solar panel installers and insulation contractors".

“Now the legislation has been passed, improvements can continue to enjoy the 5% rate to make homes warmer, cut bills and save money. omorrow (Thursday) Energy and Climate Change ministers will be in the House for their monthly question time. I hope, by then, the Government will have clarified its position so we know how ministers intend to keep existing relief despite being at odds with EU law and the court ruling”, Mr Amphlett concluded.

BMF launches free Branch Finder app

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has launched an new Branch locator app that will help customers and tradesmen find the nearest builders merchant outlet across the whole UK.

Available free of charge on Apple iOS and Android, the app enables to search by the merchant’s name, products sold or current location. It uses GPS tracking and geolocation functionality to display a list of the nearest outlets.

BMF MD, John Newcomb commented: “This is the only free app providing information and direct access to thousands of builders merchants throughout the country.  Many tradesmen rely on their smartphone to contact merchants and order materials. This will be a real help when they are working on site, particularly when they are away from their usual merchants. As there is no cost involved, I would urge everyone to download the app today, so it is ready on your smartphone when you need it.”

The BMF Branch Locator App can be freely downloaded at http://apps.excelpublishing.co.uk/bmf/ or via Apple and Android app stores.

BMF to have exhibition Pavilion at UK Construction Week 2016

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) will have its own branded Pavilion at the UK Construction Week 2016, to take place at the NEC Birmingham from 18-23 October  2016.

The BMF Pavilion will be sited across the Build Show and HVAC areas of the exhibition, which features nine separate shows in total, including Grand Designs Live.

John Newcomb, BMF Managing Director, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to bring merchants and suppliers together to find out more about the latest products and new technology and building techniques coming on stream. When I joined the industry I was surprised that it had not had a major exhibition to showcase the latest trends for a number of years. Now UK Construction Week has filled that gap. By working with a broad range of industry associations, like the BMF, the organisers are making the event relevant to as many people as possible, giving them multiple reasons to attend.”

Nathan Garnett, Event Director, UK Construction Week commented: “We are delighted to be working with the BMF. The first edition of UK Construction Week in 2015 attracted 500 merchants. With the help of the BMF we believe we can multiply this number greatly. We are committed to making UK Construction Week the largest collection of innovative exhibitors, products, new buildings, materials and techniques. Working with industry experts, associations and thought leaders, including the BMF, is a crucial element of that intent.”

BMF members taking exhibition space within the BMF Pavilion will benefit from a substantial 25% discount.

For further information, or to reserve a place in the BMF area, it is possible to contact [email protected] or [email protected].
