Making Life Cycle Assessments Mainstream | 7 March 2017 | Excel, London

On Tuesday 7th March 2017, the world’s first life cycle assessments calculated through the new BRE LINA tool will be unveiled at Ecobuild [Excel London].

The launch event "Making Life Cycle Assessments Mainstream" - to be held at the joint Confederation of Timber Industries (CTI) and Wood for Good stand (E109) at 2-3pm - will include presentations from Iain McIlwee, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), Smair Ghumra, Director at the Centre for Sustainable Products and Beatrix Richards, Head of Corporate Stewardship and Sustaibale Commodities at WWF UK.

Iain McIlwee said: “This is timber leading the debate once again. LINA is proving to be a powerful calculator which now allows us at the BWF to build on the early work of Wood for Good and the Wood Window Alliance to produce bespoke life cycle assessments for our members’ products.

“This is a major breakthrough in proving categorically timber’s superior environmental sustainability credentials. The simple approach and science behind this environmental tool unravels many of the complexity excuses made by competing materials about why embodied carbon cannot be taken into consideration. It revolutionises the way EPDs can be produced and takes us one step closer to these declarations hitting the mainstream.”

Beatrix Richards added: "Government figures suggest we may need to build a million new houses by 2020.  As we seek to ensure that this construction, and indeed the on-going repair and restoration of the existing housing stock, has the lowest possible environmental impact, it is critical that we understand the full life time costs of all the products we use.  This applies to everything - cement, bricks, doors, windows etc.

“Tools exist to help architects, builders, suppliers and consumers to understand the true, full costs, from sourcing, manufacturing, transportation, life time use and disposal, so that decisions can be made on the best possible information. Life cycle assessments are one such way of capturing this information and WWF welcomes the British Woodworking Federation’s lead in adopting this approach."

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) will be the first customer worldwide for BRE LINA. This allows the BWF to produce life cycle assessment results for its members’ products which are then uploaded into the BRE Hub so that a third party verified BRE Global Environmental Performance Declaration (EPD) can be produced.

The results can also inform assessments for ISO 14001, EN 15804 (the European standard for the sustainability of construction products) and other environmental management systems, and can feed into BIM (Building Information Modelling).

Sylva Wood 2016 celebrates outstanding results

From 27 to 29 June 2016, Shanghai hosted 'Sylva Wood 2016', Asia's main wood materials show.

The event attracted around 10,000 visitors, a majority of whom professional buyers from the flooring, furniture, cabinetry, doors and windows, and stairs sector.

Celebrating some of the most exciting innovations in the industry, Sylva Wood 2016 invited experts to present on technology and innovation, and the demand and supply of wood across the globe.

The event agenda featured workshops and debates on a varied gamut of themes: - China's wood products and furniture consumption; - Global timber supply to Chinese market; - Plywood design; - Business opportunities in Africa; - Timber drying & Wood treatment technologies.

Exhibitors and visitors from all over the world included, among the others, Michael Snow, Executive Director of the American Hardwood Export Council, Mr Tan Ting Wai, Director of the Malaysian Timber Council, Mr Xu Fang, Director of American Softwoods, Mr Jean Francois Guilbert, Managing Director of French Timber, Mr Jeff Lee, Market Director of Canada Wood, Mr James Xu, President of the Shanghai Timber Industry Association Professional Committee.

For the first time, Sylva Wood also saw the presence of the Alberta Forest Products Association, APA—The Engineered Wood Association, representatives from the L’Union Forestiere des Industrielles Asiatiques du Gabon (UFIAG), Malaysian Wood Industries Association Council, Quebec Wood Export Bureau and Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation.

“The need to conceive solid business strategy has never been more important at this moment,” said William Pang, Managing Director of Shanghai Pablo Exhibition Pte Ltd, in his opening address, referring to the importance of the China market in today’s economic scenario.

“The ripple effect from the global economic slowdown can be seen and felt tremendously. With the logging ban in China, domestic demand is set to increase with local manufacturers expecting quality materials that cater to their specific requirements. Addressing this, Sylva Wood aims to be the platform to discover pioneering ideas that can challenge norms and create unconventional possibilities for the industry", Mr Pang concluded.
