Mark Farmer to be keynote speaker at Explore Offsite Futures 2016

Mark Farmer, CEO and Founding Director of the Real Estate & Construction Consultancy Cast, is confirmed to speak at Explore Offsite Futures on the 24 November at the NEC, Birmingham.

Mark was most recently commissioned by the Construction Leadership Council, at the request of government, to undertake a review of the UK’s construction labour model. The report under the banner of 'The Farmer Review of the UK Construction Labour Model' and subtitled 'Modernise or Die'- has now been delivered and has focused a great deal of media attention towards the construction industry's dysfunctional training model, its lack of innovation and collaboration as well as its non-existent research and development (R&D) culture.

One of the main suggestions within the report, is that the UK construction industry needs to embrace offsite manufacture, and therefore Explore Offsite Futures is your opportunity to hear directly from the author and the Q&A session will provide answers to your questions about this report.

Mark will be discussing ‘Building a Mature UK Pre-Manufacturing Sector: Implications of the Farmer Review’ at Explore Offsite Futures.

You can book your place at the event by following this link: http://exploreoffsite.co.uk/book

'Circular economy in the built environment' conference | 21 September 2016 | London

On Wednesday 21 September 2016, the Building Centre in London will host the conference 'Circular economy in the built environment'.

The event - organised in collaboration between Arup and The Built Environment Trust - will explore the concept of circular economy in the construction sector, providing an opportunity for dialogue, learning and discussion.

The conference invites leading policy makers, designers, engineers and economists to share their views and expertise on the circular economy, and what the concept could mean for the future of the built environment. Industry experts will discuss how we should change the way we develop, procure, design, construct, operate, maintain and repurpose our cities, infrastructure, buildings and services.

The first part of the afternoon will explore the economic case for the circular economy, looking at ‘why’ this concept has the potential to transform our industry. This will include a conversation on government policy, financial models and the business case. The second part of the afternoon will focus on the ‘how’; exploring current best practice and emerging approaches for applying the circular economy within the context of architecture, design and engineering practice.

Speakers include:

  • Duncan Baker-Brown, director and owner of BBM Sustainable Design
  • Cecile Fraraud, circular economy lead at Peterborough City Council
  • Gregory Hodkinson, chairman at Arup
  • Nitesh Magdani, director of sustainability at BAM Construct UK
  • Andrew Richmond, policy and programme manager at Greater London Authority
  • Stuart Smith, director at Arup
  • Ken Webster, head of innovation at Ellen MacArthur Foundation
