CTI comment on Housing White Paper: Timber solutions can greatly improve quality and quantity of UK housing supply
The Confederation of Timber Industries has responded to the recent White Paper: Fixing our Broken Housing Market highlighting the vital role timber has in delivering sustainable and quality homes at the levels required to meet the housing shortfall in the UK.
The response - downloadable here - welcomes the Government's Housing White Paper issued in February 2017 and proposes tangible "timber solutions" to the challenges of current UK housing market.
CTI Chairman Roy Wakeman commented: “Echoing the conclusion of our recent parliamentary debate on this subject, timber has technological proven solutions to clear the bottle-neck and improve the quality of housing supply in the UK. We offer a number of pre-manufactured solutions, from entire timber constructions to pre-finished engineered components that support a more efficient modern build process and are working hard to train the supply chain to support installation."
"The overall thrust of the White Paper is very positive - we absolutely have to clear planning bottlenecks and supply side issues to ensure demand is met. In this we also have to remember we are building homes, not just housing. We have a duty of care to the safety and wellbeing of the residents of each new home and to consider the impact of building on our environment."
"Leaning on the timber supply chain is a good start in making the changes that need to happen. I was very much minded as I read the consultation of words of architect Michael Green, 'Wood is the most technologically advanced material that we can build with. The Earth grows our food. The earth can grow our homes. It’s an ethical change we have to go through.'"
